Hockey Director Bobby Ruddle

Greetings

I want to introduce myself to the Southern Oregon Hockey community!

My name is Bobby Ruddle, and I am from Breckenridge, Colorado! I started playing hockey when I was 4 years old and never looked back. I started my junior hockey career here in Medford, Oregon playing for the Southern Oregon Spartans during their 2010-2011 hockey season. I then continued to find success on the east coast playing for the Florida Jr. Blades in Estero, Florida. I have always had a passion for coaching, and helping other players build up their confidence on the ice! So, naturally after juniors I jumped right into coaching. I have held a variety of coaching positions from a skills and drills instructor, to an AA Bantam coach and I was the Assistant Coach of Breckenridge Bolts Junior Hockey team.

With summer coming to an end, and in-house hockey approaching, I am excited for the upcoming season! As the new Hockey Director, it is my goal to create a program where kids can develop and refine their hockey abilities, all while maintaining a welcoming, fun, and safe environment. My focus word for this upcoming season is: Growth. I hope that with our efforts that our program will see growth among our players and within our hockey community! I am incredibly excited to be a part of this organization, and I look forward to seeing you all around the Rrrink!

How to become a USA Hockey Coach

BECOME A COACH

What are the steps to become a coach? USA Hockey and the Coaching Education Program require both certification and registration to be eligible to coach. Registration is done online on a yearly basis. Certification is also required. A few basic requirements are as follows:

USA Hockey Requirements

  • Register as a member of USA Hockey.
  • Complete the background screening.*
  • Complete the USA Hockey Safe Sport Training.*

*Both the background screening and SafeSport training will be required annually starting with the 2012-2021 season.

Coaching Education Program Requirements

  • Register and attend the required certification clinic. You can only attend one clinic per season. The coaching clinic season for Levels 1-3 officially runs from September 1 to December 31.
  • Complete the online age-specific module(s) for the age level of play you are coaching. The online modules are available from September 1 to December 31.
  • You must attend the required clinic and complete the necessary online age-specific module(s) by December 31 of the current playing season to continue coaching on January 1.

Coaching Code of Ethics
9/17/2014

  • Winning is a consideration, but not the only one, nor the most important one. Care more about the child than winning the game. Remember, players are involved in hockey for fun and enjoyment.
  • Be a positive role model to your players, display emotional maturity and be alert to the physical safety of players.
  • Be generous with your praise when it is deserved; be consistent and honest; be fair and just; do not criticize players publicly; learn to be a more effective communicator and coach; don't yell at players.
  • Adjust to personal needs and problems of players; be a good listener; never verbally or physically abuse a player or official; give all players the opportunity to improve their skills, gain confidence and develop self-esteem; teach them the basics.
  • Organize practices that are fun and challenging for your players. Familiarize yourself with the rules, techniques and strategies of hockey; encourage all your players to be team players.
  • Maintain an open line of communication with your players' parents. Explain the goals and objectives of your association.
  • Be concerned with the overall development of your players. Stress good health habits and clean living.
  • To play the game is great, to love the game is greater.
